Chapter Twenty-Three
With Mohrn’s safety ensured, I can relax a little. I only spend one day on H’looder’s ship before the MC skiff returns me to Pfahrn at the start of the next morning local time. All I have with me is my backpack, so I opt to walk back to the estate instead of hiring a ground transport.
I do love this planet, what I’ve seen of it so far. It’s pretty, it’s warm but not brutally hot, and I feel a kind of peace here. When I’m alone outside, not when I’m with the assholes, of course.
The only thing that would make this better would be having Mohrn here with me.
And not living with these assholes.
Although it is uncomfortable when people look at me and watch me as I walk through town from the transport station, I’ve gotten to the point where I can ignore them. It’s well-known exactly who I am. I haven’t seen any other humans down here, other than the MC or prison personnel who transport me, although I have seen non-Pfahrn races in town.
I’m relieved when I reach the outskirts of town and leave it behind me. The walk is maybe thirty minutes, nothing bad. And it allows me time to think and process.
This time, I’m thinking and processing what I did with the Guyardiens. If those fuckers cross me, I’ll get H’looder involved and bring the weight of the MC down on their damn heads. There has to be something I can use as leverage against them if they don’t keep Mohrn safe.
I damn sure don’t want to repeat the encounter with the Guyardiens. Because the more I think about it, it makes me feel…
Not sure how to label it. It’s a dark, foul mix of regret and self-loathing. I think I would, ironically, feel better if physically I hadn’t enjoyed it as much as I did.
Still, I sooth my aching conscience by reminding myself it was to keep Mohrn safe, and it didn’t violate our contract.
The next thing I want to do is increase the frequency of my visits with Mohrn. After a little research over the next week, I talk to the associate warden Mohrn’s assigned to. That’s who all visits are arranged through. They’re the person who supervises Mohrn’s incarceration, coordinates any medical care, all of that.
The associate warden’s a Shalfin, a guy named something I can’t pronounce because Shalfin isn’t one of my languages. But he uses Bob as a Standard common name so people know what the hell to call him. Being he’s a Shalfin, it means I’m not getting any bullshit razzing about my situation like I probably would were it another human.
I normally don’t like Shalfin very much because my first experience with one was a guy in my basic training class who cheated at cards. This one seems nice, though, if not a little full of himself.
Stroking his ego works to my advantage. After chatting, a little schmoozing, and a lot of bribery—because lucky for me it’s
